Stranger Than Fiction

I have come to associate Will Ferrell with comedy - not just because of his movies, but 'cos of his shows, videos, association with Fratpack, and the like.
While watching Stranger Than Fiction, I was not expecting anything different .. than from a regular Will Ferrell fare - but boy was I wrong ! Let me correct it, I was pleasantly wrong :-)

Dustin Hoffman and Will Ferrell give a really good performance .. definitely worth a watch

You have become a movie buff! Don't understand how both you and Pandi are turning to movies so much these days.. :D Nice movie that one. There is another one calles 'Adaptation' with Nicholas Cage & Meryl Streep that is a darker/gloomier version of the idea.

I guess this stage will pass like 'someone' lost interest in astronomy ;-)

Btw, I have adaptation - just have not got time to watch it yet.

Becoming too irritated

rant mode = on

For quite a while now, I have been evangelizing netbeans - partly because I used to work on studio (which was built on top of netbeans), partly because it showed a lot of promise ... but of late, I am getting seriously pissed with it. When really simple things dont work after so many years of development - I think it is time to stop using the ide.

I am not going to list all the past problems I have had - stability, inability to handle very large projects too well, project support screwing up for free-form projects, etc, etc - but the last straw is the pretty messed up refactoring support - it returns inconsistent query results, and some of the transformations left the codebase mucked up (recoverable ofcourse, no thanks to netbeans).

No, dont tell me to keep filing bugs for such really basic and simple functionality. I have already lost quite a lot of time and effort on this - 'find usage' which does not find all usages (and get arbitrarily disabled at times requiring an ide restart ?! wtf !), 'go-to definitions' which dont work, refactoring which leaves the code all messed up (simple ones like rename class, etc) - the sort of basic stuff which has been around for ages in every language and ide.

So it is goodbye netbeans for now - instead of trying to expand into other languages, probably they should probably try to fix the basic support I guess.

*Update* Impressed with Intellij - so much so that, I forked out $250 for it

I've heard good things about InelliJ too. From some of the Java devs at my new PoW (place of work).

Sticking to my outdated and very labor intensive emacs though :-/

Tee's arrive !

Finally got the two tee-shirt's I ordered from xkcd.
They are based on this and this.

I already had the "Online Communities Poster" and "Map of the Internet" (based on this) delivered a while back from the store.

"Names"

This is so much like me ! I totally suck at remembering things - particularly names and relatives (& relationships).

Not so long ago, I once forgot my sisters name ....
Usually as a last ditch effort, I ask for the person's full name :-)

Kalaan! you remember my name when you can't remember a name. Then proceed to blame me for leading the unknowns to you. You'll die of Alzheimer's.

Accomplished ...

I was watching a bunch of movies the last few weeks - not only the famous, but the offbeat, not-so-famous to downright boring stuff ... essentially to drown all other thoughts.

What I found interesting was that, in some of the movies, some of the young actors & actresses play their part surprisingly well - and looking up their career in imdb tends to be very instructive - most of the interesting performances were by people who have been acting from quite a young age: might not have been prominent roles, but they have been involved.

One of the things we keep discussing is the degradation in standards in movie making : the lack of story, acting ability, change of focus, shallowness, the mania for sequels to make a quick buck ...
This is not triggered by some then-vs-now syndrome, but most of the movies nowadays are genuinely shit : in almost all movie industries (which make movies which I watch anyway). But maybe we will soon have a new breed of movies and performers who will keep us entertained with some good features.

Here is hoping for the best !
