Broadband in India

Pathetic situation, I really wish some domestic or even an international player came along and offered some good solutions in this space : they will sweep the market. I have no hope from the government or its agencies doing something to clear this mess up.

We have idiots running around giving 'unlimited' connections which are essentially bandwidth capped.

From the latest mail I got from Airtel, the self proclaimed 'leading' player in the field "upto X GB at speed of Y Mbps, beyond that 256kbps".
Here X is something like 15, 20, 25, 40, 50 GB.
And Y is something like 1, 2, 4 Mbps.

And ironically, they call it 'fair use plan', not 'incompetence plan' !! What the hell is 'fair use' in this context !

To compound the problem, their metering sucks ass: I have been on the wrong end of it in the past when airtel claimed a bill of Rs. 30k + : and it included periods when I was not in India, with my electricity mainswitch turned off :-P

And dont get me started about the pathetic latencies we get here, 300 to 500ms is the best you hope for : most times, it is much worse.

When every other country in the world is investing heavily in improving this infrastructure, India still hobbles along on bullock cart at the gutters of information superhighway ....
